Benefits of an Unvented Cylinder

Are you considering getting an unvented cylinder installed in your home? Before you make this choice, it is important you know what they do and what the benefits are! We have made a handy guide to help you get to grips with unvented cylinders, so keep reading to find out more...

What is an unvented cylinder?

With an unvented system, your home operates with no cold water tank. Instead, your hot water cylinder is linked directly with mains cold water. The unvented cylinder is heated by immersion heaters of a boiler/wet solar system and is kept under pressure from the incoming water supply. Unvented cylinder systems are 'sealed' and require an expansion vessel next to or within the boiler/cylinder. This allows the expansion of water as it heats up and allows the pressure to increase.

What are the benefits of an unvented cylinder?

Unvented cylinders can withstand a lot of impact and internal forces, so are extremely safe when fitted and installed correctly. They also have very high tensile strength, as they are usually made from stainless steel.

As you no longer require a cold water tank, an unvented system frees up space in your property, which can be very valuable to you. They also have stronger water pressure, so you can enjoy powerful showers and quick-filling baths- however, this depends on the strength of your mains pressure, to begin with.

Standard vented cylinders require gravity to work, so need to be installed in the loft usually. However, with an unvented system, you are free to instal it anywhere that works best for you. This can free up valuable storage space in your loft, as well as being easier to access in times of emergency.

As there is no cold water that will be filling up, your system will be much quieter as it operates. As well as this, your system is fully sealed- so cannot freeze over during the winter.
